Oppose the Save America Act.
I was originally incensed by the challenges Donald Trump made directed against Democrats at the State of the Union address on Tuesday. Particularly upsetting was the demand that they stand and show themselves for or against the statement that: "The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens." It had followed a long rehearsal of the lies he has previously presented concerning the evils of illegal aliens, lies that have been frequently many times disproven. This was in fact just one more lie; in point of fact: it is the first duty of the federal government to protect "all residents" within the borders of the United States--not just citizens--according to the U.S. constitution. If the Democrats had stood, they would have been agreeing not only to the lies but also to the violation of the constitution they were sworn to protect and uphold.
However, that's not the worst of what was presented in the address. Buried about three quarters of the way through was a demand for the passage of the Save America Act. It is being touted as a law that would prevent illegal aliens from voting in federal elections. They do not. Even the Heritage Foundation, authors of Project 2025, admit there have been only sixty-eight (68) cases of voter fraud in the past forty years and none of them were committed by alien residents in this country. Sorry, they were all committed by Republicans trying to vote twice for Donald Trump in the same election.
So what is the Save America Act about? They want every voter in the U.S. to have a voter ID card, separate from your driver's license, separate from your ID travel card, that must be presented to vote in any election or a federally issued passport. As of January this year, a new adult U.S. passport costs $130 plus a $35 acceptance fee for new applicants, newly instituted by the Trump State Department. That's $165. Add to that the cost of the documentation necessary for the application: $15 to 85 dollars for a certified copy of your birth certificate; if a woman, $15 to 85 dollars for a copy of your marriage license showing your name change; a certified copy of your driver's license or other photo ID; and a 2x2 inch photograph of your head and shoulders (not a selfie). The total cost to create a voter ID may run each voter upwards of $200 minimum.
And, a lot of people are buying into the notion that this expense is all necessary because of the Trump claim of voter fraud. Unfortunately, what it amounts to is voter suppression. That's a fancy way of saying they are trying to make it harder to vote, so hard that you won't vote. They are counting on keeping the American people away from the polls so that we won't vote them out of office, so that they can continue their reign of terror on immigrants and protestors against the ICE raids that separate families and terrorize and murder ordinary U.S. citizens.
However, even more insidious is that buried deep in the Save America Act is a clause that would allow DHS to revoke your citizenship whether you were born here, the child of multi-generations of Americans, or a naturalized citizen. They would strip your rights, your freedoms, your vote, and deport you for just saying you don't like Trump, or for just driving down the street that was clear when you went this way to the supermarket but is blocked going home by ICE now. Furthermore, they are attempting to redefine voting as a privilege granted by the federal government to you rather than as your right and responsibility.
We've got to fight back. And how we do that is by contacting our representatives today and telling them to "Oppose the Save America Act." If you do not know how to do that, open your web browser and type: "contact my congressman or contact my senator." It will take you to a page to help you identify who that person is based on your zip code and street address. Select which of them Congressmen or Senators you wish to contact, fill out the form, and in the message section, tell them how you feel about this Trump proposed legislation. Yes, contact them even if you think what is happening is a terrific idea and want to give up democracy and your right to vote.
